I recently traveled to Arizona to hike to Havasupai Falls in the Grand Canyon National Area. Since I was going to be in that area, I decided to take an extra four or five days to explore Northern Arizona and Southern Utah. This trip took me through Highway 89, also known as US 89 or US Route 89. US 89 is often called the National Park Highway because it takes you through seven national parks. Join me as I uncover the wonders of this magnificent highway and discover the remarkable destinations it offers.
Highway 89, stretching through the scenic landscapes of Arizona and Utah, is a road-trippers dream. This historic highway takes you on a journey through some of the most breathtaking and diverse terrains in the American Southwest. Here are some must-visit places along this iconic route, starting from the vibrant town of Sedona.
Note: Although US 89 officially starts in Flagstaff, we've included Sedona as an extension to the Flagstaff area due to its proximity and the scenic State Route 89A that connects the two.
Sedona, Arizona
1. Red Rock State Park: Begin your journey in Sedona, renowned for its stunning red rock formations and vibrant arts scene. Red Rock State Park offers hiking trails with panoramic views of the iconic red sandstone formations, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
2. Chapel of the Holy Cross: This architectural marvel, built into the red rock cliffs, offers a unique spiritual experience with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It's a must-visit for its serene atmosphere and stunning design.

4. Grand Canyon National Park: Although Highway 89 does not directly connect to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, it provides access via a short detour. From Flagstaff, head west on Highway 180, or Cameron, take Highway 64 west to reach the South Rim. With its immense size and intricate landscape, the Grand Canyon offers unparalleled views, hiking opportunities, and the chance to witness one of the world’s most stunning natural wonders.

Near Page, Arizona
5. Horseshoe Bend: A short detour from Highway 89 near Page, Arizona, takes you to the famous Horseshoe Bend. This iconic meander of the Colorado River provides one of the most photographed vistas in the Southwest. A moderate hike leads you to a breathtaking overlook where you can witness the river curving sharply around a sandstone escarpment, offering spectacular panoramic views.
6. Lake Powell: Heading further north, you’ll reach Lake Powell, a sparkling blue reservoir within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The lake offers numerous water activities, including boating, kayaking, and fishing. 9. Grand Staircase-Escalante: As you cross into southern Utah, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument beckons with its vast and varied landscapes. This expansive area encompasses slot canyons, plateaus, and unique geological features. Scenic Byway 12, which intersects Highway 89, offers access to some of the monument’s most spectacular spots, including the Escalante Canyons.

10. Zion National Park: Continuing along Highway 89, Zion National Park is a must-visit destination. This park is famous for its towering sandstone cliffs, narrow slot canyons, and lush river valleys. Hike the famous Angel’s Landing trail for a thrilling experience with breathtaking views, or explore the serene Narrows, where you can wade through the Virgin River between towering canyon walls.
Near Bryce Canyon City, Utah
11. Bryce Canyon National Park: A slight detour from Highway 89 leads you to Bryce Canyon National Park, known for its distinctive hoodoos—tall, thin spires of rock that rise dramatically from the canyon floor. The park’s scenic drive provides multiple overlooks where you can marvel at these unique formations, especially at sunrise and sunset when the colors are most vibrant.
