Exploring the Appian Way and St. Callisto Catacombs by E-bike
Today, we embarked on an exhilarating adventure that turned our day into an unforgettable journey! Originally planning to tour the catacombs in Rome, we stumbled upon an e-bike tour of the Appian Way and the St. Callisto Catacombs – and what a discovery it was!
Our journey kicked off at the bike depot, where we hopped onto our e-bikes and zoomed towards the catacombs of St. Callisto. These ancient burial grounds, the official cemetery of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century AD, hold the remains of around half a million Christians, including numerous martyrs and 16 popes. Named after the deacon St. Callixtus, who was tasked by Pope Zephyrinus to manage the cemetery, these catacombs were nothing short of awe-inspiring.
After soaking in the history, we pedaled along the legendary Appian Way, an ancient road that winds through picturesque countryside. Riding past fields and woodlands, we reached the original section of the Appian Way, where stones laid by Romans 2300 years ago still stand.
We took a brief shortcut along an asphalt road to avoid the bumpy ancient stones, and within minutes, we entered the lush Park of the Aqueducts. Cycling between towering stone arches, we marveled at the impressive Roman aqueducts, stopping to admire the majestic Aqueduct Claudio. Continuing south, we glimpsed the still-functional Aqueduct Felice before heading back to Rome through the serene Caffarella Valley.
In total, we covered almost 20 kilometers, but the adventure and the breathtaking views made every moment worth it. For those seeking a unique way to dive into Rome’s rich history and stunning landscapes, this tour is an absolute must. A huge shoutout to Red Bicycle Company for crafting such an unforgettable experience!
